What Does Tiramisu Taste Like

Does tiramisu have caffeine? What does tiramisu taste like? If this is your first time trying tiramisu cake, you are in for a treat! Traditionally, chefs make this delicious Italian dessert with layers of coffee-infused flavors and creamy textures. With each spoonful, you’ll enjoy the subtle sweetness with just the right amount of bitterness from cocoa and coffee flavoring. Before you start, there are many essential ingredients that you must include in a properly made tiramisu cake that you should be aware of: 

  • Eggs – In almost every Italian tiramisu recipe, you’ll find egg yolks. Yolks are the main ingredient that gives this dessert a rich texture, yellowish color, and smooth taste. The traditional Italian tiramisu recipe calls for raw eggs, but nowadays, we recommend it’s best to cook them to avoid salmonella. 
  • Egg whites or heavy cream – Using heavy cream in an Italian tiramisu recipe is also an option. Regardless of whether you chose to add heavy cream or egg whites, both should be whipped into a light filling and added to egg yolks and mascarpone. It’s important to note that both will generate a different flavor. When you chose to use egg whites, the batter will be airier. If you decide to use heavy cream, the batter will be rich. 

If you chose to use egg whites, you should refrain from using the cream for tiramisu cake and vice versa. You’ll want to utilize an electric mixer to form stiff peaks and fold them into the mascarpone. When adding raw eggs, ensure they are the freshest you can find. 

  • Cheese Another decadent ingredient in tiramisu cake is cheese. You have the option of using mascarpone, cream cheese, or both. Each cheese will change the flavor of the recipe. For example, if you chose to use cream cheese, it will contribute a sour taste compared to the sweet flavor of mascarpone. For the best results, it’s a good idea to stick with mascarpone. An Italian tiramisu recipe can combine the two ingredients, adding complexity to the flavor. However, for the best and richest tastes and textures, we recommend mascarpone by itself. 
  • Alcohol – Cooking with wine is as luxurious as it gets! This Italian tiramisu recipe calls for Marsala, a fortified Sicilian wine often used for cooking. You can choose to use a substitute like brandy, dark rum, coffee liquor, and almond liqueur. We recommend using authentic Sicilian Marsala wine. If it’s not from Sicily, it’s not genuine!

Tiramisu is the perfect dessert for a summer pool party or Fourth of July barbecue. So, grab your favorite cake stand and get ready for the compliments to start pouring in. 

  • Ingredients
    • The cake: 
      • 6 large eggs
      • 1 cup of granulated white sugar
      • 1 cup of all-purpose flour
      • 1 tablespoon of cornstarch
      • ½ teaspoon of baking powder
      • ½ teaspoon of strong brewed espresso coffee, chilled
      • 1 ½ cups of cooled heavy cream
    • Mascarpone frosting: 
      • 4 ½ cups of cold mascarpone
      • 2 ½ cups of sifted powdered sugar
      • ½ cup of strong brewed espresso coffee, chilled
      • 1 ½ cup of cooled heavy cream
      • Unsweetened cocoa for topping
    • Additional toppings:
      • Cocoa powder
      • Whipped cream
  • Preparation
    • Phase 1: First, line the bottom and sides of three eight-inch pans with parchment paper and set them aside. While preparing the pans, preheat the oven to 350 degrees. 
    • Phase 2: Now, the fun part of making the cake begins! Using a large mixing bowl and a handheld mixer with a whisk attachment, whisk the eggs on medium speed. Next, add the sugar and continue to whisk at medium-high speed until the mixture is pale white and foamy, about 10 to 12 minutes. If you’re using a handheld mixer, it’ll take between three to five minutes longer. To check for consistency, allow a small amount of batter to drip from the whisk back into the batter. It should take about 10 seconds to drip back into the batter. If it takes less time, you should keep whisking. 
    • Phase 3: Using a wooden spoon, gently add and fold in the flour, baking powder, and cornstarch. Be careful not to overwork the batter or fold too quickly, or it will lose too much air, thus losing its fluffiness.
    • Phase 4: Take the prepared pans and divide the batter into each one. Bake for 20 to 22 minutes and use a toothpick to check for readiness. Once complete, let the baking pans cool for five minutes. After the time is up, remove the cake and paper from the pans. Transfer the cakes onto a wire rack to cool completely. 
    • Phase 5: The second most crucial step is making the mascarpone frosting! Take the mascarpone and whisk on medium speed until completely creamy and smooth for a couple of minutes. Now, add the powdered sugar and whisk for another one to two minutes. Next, add the coffee and whisk for an additional two to three minutes until well-combined. Lastly, include the heavy cream and whisk for two to three minutes until fully incorporated. 
    • Phase 6: Let’s assemble the cake! Grab your cake stand or cake board and place the first cake layer on it. Brush the cake with a ½ cup of coffee, then spread a ⅓ of the mascarpone cream using an offset spatula on top. You’ll repeat this process and place the last cake layer on top, lightly frosting the sides and outside of the cake. Be sure to level all sides of the cake and chill in the refrigerator for at least four hours. 
    • Phase 7: If you want to get fancy, feel free to pipe whip cream on top of the cake. Add more flavor by dusting cocoa right before serving your friends and family. If there are any leftovers, you can store the cake in an airtight container for up to three days. Now, sit back, enjoy, and watch the compliments roll in!
